Addition of organic matter to soils has proven to reduce soil compaction.  This study involved application of inorganic fertilizer in comparison to organic fertilizers in a complete randomized design.  The same fertility treatments were applied from 2001-2006.  Those treatments are poultry litter applied at the N rate (NPL), poultry litter applied at P rate only (PPL), poultry litter applied at P rate with supplemental inorganic N (NPPL) and inorganic fertilizer (I).  Two soil cores, to a depth of 10 cm were collected from each plot on March 22 and June 14, 2006.  Average bulk density for each plot was determined by the two cores being weighed and divided by volume for each sampling date.  Statistical analysis indicated that there were no differences,based on fertility treatment, within each sampling date.  However, there was a statistical difference between sampling dates, with June being higher than March.  This potentially could be due to compaction caused by application equipment for the fertilizers.
