Developing a Biobased Economy.

Duane Johnson, Montana State Univ, Northwestern Ag Research Ctr, Kalispell, MT 59901

Agriculture in the United States is a microcosm of the American economy. The loss of agricultural product diversity and dependence on foreign imports has had a significant effect on rural America. A biobased economy is one where we can partially replace farm-grown materials for those derived from non-renewable sources. During this presentation we will examine some of the impacts that  could be seen in terms of restoring rural community viability and providing diversity to these communities. The products to be demonstrated are those which have shown sufficient market demand and economic viability to impact local agricultural economies and support biobased economies. The presentations that follow will cover a number of examples of crops and products that are in development from agriculturally related sciences.
