Yield of Winter Canola as Affected by Spring Application of Nitrogen.

William F. Heer, Kansas State Univ, South Central Field, 10620 S Dean Road, Hutchinson, KS 67501-7823

Nitrogen needs for winter canola in the southern Great Plains have not been determined. Much of the information for recommendations for this area comes from data outside the area. This study was set up to provide some data on spring application of Nitrogen to winter canola. The study used a randomized block design with four replications. All plots received 28 kg ha-1 N and 45 kg ha-1 P2O5 just prior to planting. Nitrogen rates of 0, 28, 56, and 84 kg ha-1 were applied in the spring prior to bolting of canola. Early data shows yearly variation with no one rate producing higher seed or oil yield.
