Developing critical thinking skills and assessment of those skills is an important objective for almost all institutions of higher education. Critical thinking is believed to be such an integral part of the education process it has been incorporated into the expectations of all general education courses at Oklahoma State University. As such, it was part of a recent institutional general education assessment for reaccredidation. However it was difficult to find evidence of development of critical thinking skills. As a result of this assessment process many faculty have had to address the institution's ability to develop critical thinking skills of the students who are going through the education process. In addition, some have used this opportunity to conduct a self-assessment of their own expectations regarding development of student critical thinking skills and assessment of those skills in the classroom. As a result of this self-assessment, a rubric was developed to assist the instructor and the student understand critical thinking skills. This rubric and example of use in course assignments will be presented.
