Nitrogen supply can significantly impact wheat growth and yield. Nitrogen loss from surface applied nitrogen may be influenced by nitrogen source. A study was establish to evaluate the response of soft red winter wheat to nitrogen supplied from four different carriers; urea, ammonium sulfate, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and ESN (slow-release). Prior to seeding wheat in the fall, all plots received 25 kg N ha-1. At green up in the spring, nitrogen was broadcast to supply 34, 67 or 101 kg N ha-1. UAN was used to supply 134 kg N ha-1. Grain yield response to nitrogen rate was similar for all nitrogen sources. Nitrogen content of the flag leaf at flower initiation provide an indication of the nitrogen treatment. Soil nitrate concentrations in the top 30 cm at harvest reflected the amounts of nitrogen applied.
