In 1993 the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) under the Cooperative States Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) formed several Southern Extension-Research Activity (SERA) groups to encourage active exchange and participation between research and extension scientists from land-grant universities and government agencies. SERA 17 was the seventeenth such group and was formed for scientists interested in issues relating to phosphorus losses from agriculture. Since the inception of SERA 17, the group has been very active and grown to include scientists from across the United States, Canada and Europe. A series of thirty-two peer reviewed best management practice (BMP) fact sheets has been developed by members of SERA 17. The BMPs described in these fact sheets can broadly be divided into three groups: (1) BMPs that have an impact on the type or source of phosphorus (Source BMPs), (2) BMPs that affect the transport of phosphorus (Transport BMPs), and (3) BMPs that have an impact on both the source and transport of phosphorus (Source and Transport BMPs). Each fact sheet lists the BMP of interest, how and where the practice works, practice effectiveness and limitations, as well as the cost of establishing and putting the practice in place. The fact sheets are now available at the SERA 17 website: http://www.sera17.ext.vt.edu/. The list of topics in this series will continue to expand, as new research and technologies demonstrate further possible reductions in phosphorus losses.
