Textbook preparation is a rewarding but challenging experience. More than anything else, it requires proper organization of time. The process begins with an outline and perhaps a sample chapter, depending on the publisher. Assessment of the potential market is also very important and publishers can provide insight on the potential of success in the market place. Manuscript preparation will usually take from 12 to 24 months depending on the length and nature of the book. There are publishers that will provide artists and photographers to help with book preparation, but for an academic textbook, this will generally be the responsibility of the author. The key to writing a textbook is persistence. Once the process is begun, the author should not stop until it is finished. The majority of book projects are started but never finished.
