On October 1, 2005 the Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village will debut an exhibit titled Secrets of the Soil: Did you say dirt? The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has teamed up with the museum staff to create an exhibit introducing visitors to all aspects of soil science. The exhibit will center on a series of monoliths of soils throughout Delaware. The monoliths along with many interactive displays will be used to illustrate the importance of soils and the information soils can provide us. Interactive displays planned for the exhibit include two soil tunnels that will demonstrate to children what the soil underneath them looks like in both an urban and rural setting. A mock soil pit will allow children to view typical horizons and features of interest to soil scientists. The pit will also have typical sampling equipment used by soil scientists to collect samples for characterization of the soil. The equipment is on loan from the NRCS National Soil Survey Laboratory in Lincoln, NE. Other interactive displays will demonstrate soil erosion, runoff, use of electronic soil surveys, soil's influence on water quality, soil properties, and air-photo interpretation.
