Surround WP Crop Protectant is highly effective in reducing sunburn damage in fruit crops. Two experiments were conducted using “on farm research” techniques in Nicoya, Costa Rica. The first experiment started in January 2004 and the second in April 2004 using a Torreon Cantaloupe melon (Cucumis melo) variety. The objective of the first experiment was to determine the effect of Surround on sunburn reduction in melon using high rates of Surround. The purpose of the second experiment was to establish a curve of response of sunburn reduction in melon using Surround at lower rates. All plants were drip irrigated daily. The treatments of the first experiment were: Control (Diatomite 75 kg ha-1), Surround (64 kg ha-1), and Surround (92 kg ha-1). The treatments of the second experiment were the following: Control (Diatomite 75 kg ha-1), Surround (25 kg ha-1), Surround (50 kg ha-1), and Surround (75 kgha-1). Surround treatments were applied using the standard farm boom and nozzle. One application per treatment was made 7 d before harvest. Diatomite was applied twice before harvest using a backpack sprayer with a conic nozzle. A paired comparison statistical model was used separately for each individual experiment using a paired comparison t-test (P>0.05). The application of Surround substantially reduced waste (71.74 % to 79.70 %) due to melon fruit sun burning as compared to the common practice of applying Diatomite. The application of Surround at a rate of 75 kg ha-1 reduced 66% fruit sunburn as compared to the common practice of Diatomite application. Lower rates of Surround did not show a better effect for reducing melon fruit sunburn as compared to the control. Surround applications reduced melon fruit waste due to sunburn. Higher rates of Surround resulted in greater effectiveness in reducing melon fruit sunburn. Surround application may result in profit increase.
