Research, service and teaching are integrated under the umbrella of an interdisciplinary initiative in the Environmental Studies Program at Wesley College. Ultimately, the aim is to educate students, faculty, and citizens in solving familiar but complex environmental problems. A focus is placed on the human impact on environmental degradation with specific emphasis on the interdisciplinary aspects of human-environment interactions and the impact of land use change on freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. GIS is used as a vehicle to investigate “what if scenarios”. Recently new GIS activities were developed to assist in field analysis of environmental change, to stimulate students' interest in science across a variety of disciplines and to introduce science and non science faculty to GIS applications. A summary of selected activities will be presented to include GPS applications, the use of high resolution imagery, linking data bases to digital maps, and GIS modeling. Strategies on integrating and implementing these new activities for non majors and majors will be discussed.
