A Novel Method to Sequester Flue Gas CO2.

Viswatej Attili and Dr. K. J. Reddy. Department Of Renewable Resources, University Of Wyoming, 13th Street, Laramie, WY 82071

Atmospheric CO2 concentration is steadily increasing over the past decade due to fossil fuel burning (e.g., coal burning power plants). Studies suggest that coal burning power plants account more than 50% of increase in the global CO2. In addition, coal burning power plants also generate solid wastes such as fly ash. The objective of this project is to design a novel method to sequester flue gas CO2. A design to react flue gas CO2 with fly ash will be developed and tested. If successful, this method may reduce emissions of CO2 from coal burning as well as minimize the migration of contaminants from the fly ash disposal sites into the surface water and groundwater.
