Controlling Cool Season Grasses in Bermudagrass.

John Boyd, University of Arkansas, PO Box 391, Little Rock, AR 72203

Postmergence applications of glyphosate, flazasulfuron, trifloxysulfuron, sulfosulfuron, foramsulfuron and rimsulfuron were evaluated at two locations for control of annual bluegrass and perennial ryegrass in dormant, common bermudagrass fairways. Herbicides were applied in late winter and early spring of 2005. In general, herbicides applied in February were more effective than those applied in March. Treatments providing greater than 85% ryegrass control at 60 days after treatment included flazasulfuron (1.5 oz/a), trifloxysulfuron (0.56 oz/a) and rimsulfuron (2.0 oz/a), and foramsulfuron at 26.4 oz/a. Treatments providing less than 85% control of perennial ryegrass were sulfosulfuron (1.33 and 2.66 oz/a), trifloxysulfuron (0.33 oz/a), glyphosate (16 fl/oz/a) and foramsulfuron (17.4 fl oz/a). All herbicides provided greater than 90% control of annual bluegrass at 80 days after treatment with the exception of sulfosulfuron at 1.33 and 2.66 oz/a (3 of 4 treatments <90%) and glyphosate at 16 fl oz/a (1 of 2 treatments <90%).
