An ionic pesticide (2,4-D; 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is one of the most widely used herbicides. The effects of organic carbon content of the soil ( 1.0, 1.9 and 4.6% ) and pH of soil solution (4.2-4.3, 5.7, 6.9-7.0 and 7.8-7.9) on the adsorption coefficients of 2,4-D on Fukushima loam soils were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. The effect of organic carbon content and pH on the adsorption coefficient Kd was quantified in a predictive equation. The equation was compared with results from other studies and used to evaluate the relative importance of organic carbon content, pH, soil moisture content, and bulk density on movement and retardation of 2,4-D.
