The recruitment and retention of soil scientists in soil survey are strategic issues of the National Cooperative Soil Survey Program (NCSS). Around 50% of NCSS soil scientists will become eligible for retirement within the next few years. A new generation of soil scientists will be necessary to carry out the USA soil survey program. A national committee was established to study and develop recommendations concerning recruitment and retention of soil scientists in soil survey. This paper will discuss committee charges, findings and recommendations.
