Above and belowground biomass of radiata pine were studied on three contrasting sites under intensive culture in the central valley of Chile. A positive linear relationship accounting for 80 to 97% variability was found between stem volume increment and leaf area across sites. The slope of the relationship more than double between contrasting sites. Similar relationships were derived for total aboveground and coarse root biomass. Aboveground and belowground biomass ratio ranged 1.5 to 3.2 and its variation was related to soil-site characteristics and silvicultural treatment.
