The Purdue Agronomy Club hosts an Invitational Soils Contest each fall near the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University. High Schools from the entire state of Indiana; FFA Chapters, Science Clubs and 4-H Clubs are invited to compete. Organization for the contest is divided into data, and soil areas. Students working on the data prepare and send invitations, order awards, grade score sheets, enter, compile and verify data and mail results. Soils students are pit monitors, data runners, parkers, practice and contest pit educators. The purpose of the contest is education, not only for the high school students preparing them for competition, but in training the Purdue students in conducting contests. We are the first contest in which most schools compete in the fall. All score cards and pit information are returned to the participants for continued learning at their respective schools. We want to continue to improve our contest education so this year soil pit pictures will be taken and displayed on the Agronomy Club web site. This will allow schools to view the soils and compare score card responses for a more comprehensive learning experience.
