Community service projects help to establish relationships within the college, university and residential communities. In March 2005, during National Agricultural Week, the Agronomy and Soils Club of the University of Florida volunteered to start one of the largest community service projects within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The project united students within the college to help with environmental restoration of a four acre land area, containing native hardwoods and vegetation, surrounding the University's President's home. We took soil samples for nutrient analyses and identified soil series to communicate to the public proper management of the land. We plotted the land area using a Global Positioning System to mark appropriate sampling sites for soil mapping. Samples were grouped based on similarities in the soil structure. Our findings indicated five different soil series in the area we studied, which were Candler, Chipley, Samsula, Pompano, and Aquolls. We created a map of the property using Geographical Information System (GIS). GIS gave us an aerial view of the property containing the different soil series and their locations. Finally, we tested 0.25 acres to be planted for wildlife habitat. We analyzed for potassium (K), since it is a vital macronutrient that plays an essential role in the metabolic process of plants and animals. Based on the results, we were able to give proper fertilizer recommendations. Potassium levels were within the recommended applied rates ranging from less than 20 ppm to 60 ppm. This study showcased undergraduate work by allowing us to use our classroom knowledge in a real world situation to help improve our local environment.
