“If you knew your history, then you would know where you're coming from.” [“Buffalo Soldier”, Bob Marley, 1983).

In preparation for the 2006 World Congress of Soil Science in Philadelphia, PA, this poster was developed to review the history of selected scientific endeavors associated with soil survey activities in the United States. The basic poster format is a timeline with generalized decadal summaries and specific events and years for each decade. The chronological history of science related to soil survey activities is organized under the following topics: World Congresses of Soil Science; Organization of the Division of Soil Survey; Soil Mapping; Field Equipment; Soil Morphology; Soil Genesis Research; Soil Classification; Historical Maps; Soil Interpretations; National Cooperative Soil Survey Program; Field Tours; Technical Guidance; International Activities; Soil Science Education; and Links to Soil Conservation. The poster will contain historical photographs, graphics, and tabular information to illustrate spatial and temporal trends. The authors also envision a future version as a dynamic, web-based multimedia presentation with hypertext-linked documents, animations and videos that provides a unique educational exploration of the history of science associated with soil survey in the U.S. Comments from interested scientists and additional contributors to the poster planned for distribution at the 2006 World Congress of Soil Science are requested.
