Straw strength is an important agronomic characteristic and a prerequisite to approach the genetic yield potential. Plant growth regulators (PGR) are a class of chemistry that decrease plant height in cereals by reducing the length of the internodes. Trinexapac-ethyl is a new PGR not labeled in the US for use in hard red spring wheat (HRSW). Trinexapac-ethyl inhibits the gibberellin biosynthesis pathway similar to chlormequat chloride. To determine the efficacy of trinexapac-ethyl in HRSW, the PGR was tested at 3 different growth stages and 4 different rates. Lodging, straw strength, grain yield, and grain quality data was collected to determine the optimum timing and application rate of trinexapac-ethyl in HRSW production. Initial results will be presented.
