Objectives of this presentation are to: (a) summarize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere, (b) describe the major GHG's associated with agriculture, and (c) review GHG contributions and mitigation potential in North America. Specific information about the nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide (CO2), including their climate forcing potentials, forms, and role of agriculture as a contributor are included. Terrestrial sinks and soil carbon sequestration are specifically discussed. Finally, summaries of the GHG contributions and mitigation potential in North American agricultural regions including general and region-specific GHG issues are discussed. Consideration is given to the global warming potential (GWP) of selected systems in the US and management strategies to sequester C are given. The presentation is summarized in a set of overall future needs and knowledge gaps required to address the GWP of North American agriculture.
