A Sustainable Rural Development Project in Morocco.

R. Kent Crookston, Brigham Young University, 301 Widtsoe Bldg., Provo, UT 84602-5250 and Mohamed Oussible, Inst. of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine Hassan II, Rabat, Morocco.

Six years ago Brigham Young University initiated a partnershiip in the remote Middle Atlas Mountains of North Africa with the Hassan II Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences [IAV] of Morocco. Dr. Mohamed Oussible, IAV director of the Project, describes the endeavor as a "noble project which has redirected our faculty to assist our own rural poor." The project involves faculty and students from both universities, and includes new crop introductions; improved crop and animal management practices; improvments in human diet; prevention of human, animal, and poultry diseases; micro industries; preserving native medicinal plants; and improved range management. The author has worked across Africa and will explain why, compared to other projects he has experienced, this project shows such high promise of sustainability after external funding stops.
